Program Notes:

When writing “Still Life” I was responding to what I felt was a simultaneity of differing emotions in Picasso's 1911 painting "Still Life with a Bottle of Rum.” To me the painting evoked the sensation of a mirror being shattered with a hammer, with the shards and fragments frozen in action and hovering in stillness despite being in the middle of this violent and energetic act. The first movement channels this frenetic energy while the 2nd movement responds with a meditation on the icy stasis. Still Life was commissioned by Benjamin Mitchell and the Enso Quartet, made possible by a grant from Chamber Music America.
